New York based painter Victor Zaldivar was born in Mexico City. At a very early age, he showed a natural and great artistic talent. He obtained a degree in Architecture at the National University of Mexico. As an architect, he worked privately and for the Government of Mexico, while continuing to seek additional creative outlets. In the 1970s he became a professional photographer and his work soon appeared in numerous publications. It was when he met the acclaimed mexican painter Edgardo Coghlan that he realized painting was his true life calling. Coghlan eagerly accepted Zaldivar as protege and friend, guiding the younger artist into the prestigious Academy of Fine Arts 'La Esmeralda" in Mexico City.

In 1987, Zaldivar moved to Nyack, New York, studying at the Art Students League with renowned American artist David A. Leffel. Leffel immediately made Zaldivar his assistant, a post Victor held for the remainder of Leffel's tenure at the ASL. Zaldivar's years at the League yielded a Merit Scholarship, awards from the Salmagundi Club, the National Arts Club, the Allied Artists of America and the Akron Society of Artists, as well as numerous accolades from institutions in New York and New Jersey.

Zaldivar grinds and mixes his own pigments, cooks his oils and driers, prepares his varnishes, canvases and panels, all in reverent accord with the methods and techniques of the l7th century Dutch masters. As a result, his figurative works, still lifes and self portraits epitomize highly refined realism and masterful handling of light.

Says Zaldivar of his art: "I'm always striving to find spirituality in everything I paint; the world inside the human being, the myriad emotions and passions. To capture all this in a painting, I study the mysticism of light and space, the two magic elements that create drama, alternately veiling and revealing the essence of a subject. With each new work I am once again fascinated by the journey of light as it probes the darkness and travels over forms, emphasizing the texture, sensuality and profundity of objects in space."

Victor Zaldivar's works are in public and private collections throughout North America and Mexico.  Zaldivar's work won awards in the International Artist's magazine, feautured in the 2007 October-November issue (# 57).
