As a painter with a collegiate teaching background in Art History, Humanities, and Drawing, Roberta Thole has always had a strong interest in classical symbolism. No longer teaching, she has been actively painting for nearly twenty years. Her current work incorporates abstraction and representational drawing into generally larger scale paintings. These paintings often combine geometric and classical architectural elements and classical motifs, such as columns, arches, urns, and goddesses, and are richly layered and textured to resemble ancient frescoed walls and ruins.
"I'm interested in classical symbolism and the power of imagery and color to trigger the mind and pique the imagination," says Thole. Her somewhat abstract paintings often allude to classic architecture, music, or states of mind, but all of her work expresses her love of the painting process, a process which she is constantly exploring and expanding through experimentation with technique and various media.
