Though born and raised in southern California, C. M. (Christina) Cooper's
early European travels and the opportunity to live in Paris for a period
proved to be the inspiration for her artistic pursuits. She received
a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1980 and after pursuing a career in advertising
as a fashion artist, doing free-lance illustration for several publications,
spending six years teaching and operating a small private art school for
budding young artists, Cooper decided to dedicate all of her energies to
her own painting career. Cooper has since worked with many respected
artists: nearly four years with Joseph Mendez, an opportunity to observe
the painting methods of Howard Terpning in a one-time-only-offered Masters
Class, and more recently, Raymond Everett Kinstler.
She has been accepted into a number of prestigious juried exhibitions and organizations and has received numerous awards and honors. Her painting, "Blue Solace," was featured in Southwest Art Magazine, July 2002, "California: Best of the West," announcing the California Art Club's Gold Medal Exhibition at the Pasadena Historical Museum, in which her she was given The Museum Director's Choice Award. In the November 2002 issue of Southwest Art, Cooper was featured in the monthly "Artists to Watch" article and in the October 2003 issue, she was one of three artists featured in the monthly "Collector's Choice" article. Other publications include International Artist Magazine - 100 Ways to Paint People and Your Favorite Subject published 2003, 2004. Christina is a member of many prestigious nationally recognized Art Organizations, including The American Artists Professional League in New York, The Oil Painters of America, The American Society of Portrait Artists, and she is an Artist Member of The California Art Club.
She refers to herself as a "contemporary traditionalist", painting traditional subject matter but, often in a contemporary, alla prima style. About her paintings Cooper states: "I really aspire to capture my emotional response when I see the beauty of a moment in time, the color harmonies, the movement, the rich grays, the textures. As artists, that is our job, to help others see with a different kind of vision.... I could paint the human figure and nothing else the rest of my life. I am obsessed with capturing the innermost quality of my subject---the humanness...."
